Synopsis

THE GOOD BOY

Raju, a poor boy in a small town in India, starts his formative years at the time of Independence. Ambitious and full of determination, he beats all odds and achieves his goals by dint of sheer hard work. He often stumbles and bruises his knees, but brushes off his injuries and continues his march ahead. He takes his whole family along the path of prosperity and achieves many goals without compromising any of the principles he holds dear. He also plays a role in the story of India, which also starts as an impoverished nation, but despite many divisive forces and four wars in a short period, progresses by achieving a white revolution, a green revolution, nuclear capability, telecom advancement, a space programme, an IT revolution, nuclear power status, and finally gets on the fast track of growth to be the second fastest growing economy in the world. Today it is knocking at the doors of the UN Security Council to claim its rightful place in the comity of nations. The novel has a few fascinating love stories intertwined, and also shows the growth and empowerment of women after Independence. The author, who lived through the period, narrates both the stories with a rare passion to make the novel a compelling read.

THE COLONEL'S LAST WICKET

In south Asia, the Army is a venerated institution and cricket is more a religion than a competitive game. Success in both is given only to a select band that devotes their heart and soul to such a way of life. Colonel Seth is such a man, an officer and a gentleman with a love of cricket. His army career and his cricketing dream provide a roller coaster ride that rockets him to the dizzy heights of fame but also plunges him into the abyss of despair.

He discovers that the game, with its hidden nuances and the institution, with its hidden agendas, are more than meets the eye. Cricket, once the gentleman's game is no longer cricket and the Army has many shades between black and white. Seth faces many ups and downs in his own career as officer and cricket player but finally, when he has hung up both his uniform and his boots, he makes a discovery. Raju, the young village orphan who sets him on a new path to accomplish his dream. Colonel Seths life becomes a keenly contested Test, which goes to the wire and is decided only when the last ball has been played.

All AT SEA

It is customary to write a disclaimer at the very outset that the characters in the stories and the incidents are fictitious and any resemblances to people living or dead is purely coincidental. However in the stories in this book there is more than a grain of truth and the rest is imagination. For all my friends in the Indian Navy and Merchant Navy all I want to say is that the stories are just for a laugh.
